Case study: Beetaloo Energy

Pioneer moving into production
Beetaloo Energy Australia Ltd (BTL) (formerly Empire Energy) is a gas exploration and development company.
Background
Beetaloo Energy Australia has invested more than A$150m to explore and appraise the Beetaloo Sub-Basin, generating economic opportunities for the regions, Traditional Owners and all Territorians.
Opportunity
Beetaloo Energy Australia has the largest tenement position in the highly prospective Greater McArthur Basin, which includes the Beetaloo Sub-basin.
Approach
Beetaloo Energy Australia has already established strong connections with businesses in the region and is working hard to progress further opportunities as project activity increases.
Solution
Beetaloo Energy Australia has developed a Carpentaria Pilot Project to undertake further appraisal activities, which includes 10 new wells and production of up to 25 TJ per day.
In July 2025, Beetaloo Energy Australia announced the successful completion of the stimulation phase of the Carpentaria-5H (C-5H) well, which is the longest horizontal well drilled to date in the Beetaloo Subbasin and in Australian history, at 3,310m.
Initial IP30 flow test results are expected in Q4 2025, with Beetaloo Energy Australia then to install its gas processing facility to connect the well pad to the Northern Territory Gas market, via the existing McArthur River Pipeline.
This well, along with two others on EP187, will underpin the Carpentaria Pilot Project.
Outcomes
The company is progressing towards appraisal gassales in 2026. The Northern Territory Government has a Gas Sales Agreement in place to provide gas to the Territory market (up to 25 TJ a day).
On the western side of the Beetaloo Sub-basin, Beetaloo Energy Australia aims to undertake seismic surveys and commence drilling some horizontal appraisal wells, in the coming year.
