How to apply

How to submit your Northern Territory nomination application

All applications and supporting documents must be submitted in the Northern Territory (NT) Government online application system.

Before applying, please ensure that you have first read the eligibility and have lodged your expression of interest in the Department of Home Affairs Skillselect.

NT nomination step-by-step guide

  1. Assess your eligibility against the Department of Home Affairs requirements (for example, age, English level, skills assessment and migration points test).
  2. Assess your eligibility for NT nomination.
  3. Submit an expression of interest in SkillSelect.
  4. Submit an application for NT Government nomination by the online application system. For checklist of documents view how to apply.
  5. If successfully nominated, you will then receive a SkillSelect invitation to apply for your visa.
  6. Return to the Department of Home Affairs website and submit an application for your visa through your Immi account.
  7. The Department of Home Affairs will advise you of the decision on your visa application.
  8. If your visa is granted, you will then be required to meet your long-term commitments to living and working in the NT.

Documents you must provide

All applications must provide the following documents:

Skills assessment

A clear colour copy of a positive skills assessment from the relevant skills assessing authority for your nominated occupation.

CV or resume

A detailed current curriculum vitae or resume.

Qualifications

  • Clear colour copies of your letters of completion that include:
    • the date the course started and ended
    • whether you did any distance learning
    • the date of course completion
    • the location of the campus where you studied
    • whether you studied full-time or part-time.
  • Academic transcripts.
  • Certificates of qualification.

Passport

Clear colour copies of your identity page of your passport and all dependent family members included in your application.

Australian visa

Evidence of your visa, if you are in Australia or have previously worked or studied in Australia.

English language test

Where required, verifiable evidence of your English proficiency - the NT Government accepts all English tests approved by the Australian Government' Department of Home Affairs.

Evidence of additional points claimed on EOI

  • If you are claiming points for your partner’s skills, a clear colour copy of your partner’s skills assessment and verifiable evidence of their competent English unless they are from an exempt country.
  • If you are claiming points for your partner’s English level, verifiable evidence of their English proficiency.
  • If your partner is an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident, a clear colour copy of your partner’s passport or their Australian citizenship certificate or their Australian permanent resident visa grant notice.
  • If you are claiming points for community language, a clear colour copy of the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) accreditation.
  • If you are claiming points for the professional year, a clear colour copy of your completion certificate from a Australian institution.

Letter of commitment

A written letter about your commitment to the NT which needs to include:

  • your commitment to living and working in your skilled occupation or a closely related skilled occupation in the NT for at least 3 years from when the visa is granted
  • why you want to live in the NT
  • how the NT lifestyle would suit your way of life more than that of any other city in Australia, and
  • be no longer than 2 pages
  • The letter of commitment must be in your own words.

Onshore applicants (NT Graduates and NT Residents) must also provide

  • Bank statements for the 12 months immediately before your application that clearly shows your day-to-day spending in the NT as evidence you have been living in the NT.
  • Evidence of residency in the NT for you and your migrating dependants for the required period (2 years for 190, 12 months for 491), for example, tenancy agreements, utility bills etc.
  • NT graduates – Job offer/Employment Contract or evidence of making genuine and sustained efforts to obtain employment in your skilled occupation in the NT; must include copies or screenshots of job applications, membership in professional associations in the NT, contact with NT employers and other supporting evidence, such as positive feedback from industry contacts in the NT.
  • NT residents – employment contract and payslips to show employment for the required period.
  • Other NT residents claiming a remote work or critical sector exemption - submission on exceptional circumstances including statement from employer as to why position is critical and you are the most suitable person to undertake the role, employer’s attempts to recruit locally, and applicant’s efforts in applying for relevant jobs in nominated or related occupation the NT.

If you are currently living outside Australia (overseas), you must also provide

  • Verifiable evidence of full-time employment in your nominated occupation for at least 2 years out of the last 5 years (for some occupations under the priority occupation stream, additional years of experience may be required).
  • If your occupation requires Australian registration or licence - evidence of registration/licence or statement explaining your eligibility to obtain registration/licence upon arriving in Australia.
  • NT job offer stream - evidence of a full-time (at least 38 hours per week) employment offer in your nominated occupation in the NT, with a contract duration of at least 12 months. The offer of employment must include the name and contact details of your NT employer.
  • NT family stream - evidence of applying for relevant jobs in the NT or making contact with NT employers.
  • NT family stream - statutory declaration from eligible relative committing to provide settlement support. Download the statutory declaration template DOCX (18 kB).

    The declaration must attach:
    • the eligible relative’s identity document (e.g. driver’s licence)
    • evidence of the eligible relative’s Australian citizenship, permanent residency or eligible visa (e.g. Australian passport, citizenship certificate or visa grant notice)
    • evidence that the eligible relative has been living in the NT for at least 12 months
    • evidence of the applicant’s relationship to the eligible relative (e.g. birth certificates, marriage certificates). A family tree may be provided in apition to official documentation to explain the relationship. If evidence cannot be provided, the reasoning must be explained in the relative’s statutory
      declaration.

Quality of documents

All documents submitted:

  • must be in English
  • documents in language other than English, must be accompanied by an official English language translation
  • must be in Adobe PDF or Microsoft Word DOC / DOCX formats.
