The development

AAM Investment Group (AAM) are proposing to develop irrigated agriculture on part of the Spirit Hills perpetual pastoral lease (NT Portions 1584 and 3221) and facilitate the expansion of the Ord River Irrigation Area across the border from Western Australia into the Northern Territory.

The development of Sweetwater will enable new arable farming land for irrigated agriculture, creating agricultural scale in the region.

AAM, is an Australian-owned and operated provider of strategic investment, asset management and operational management services focusing on Australia’s agricultural industries. AAM has extensive experience in primary production and agribusiness, and strong industry relationships in the Northern Territory as well as in Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.

Why it matters!

  • Government backed land assessments already completed.
  • The Australian Government, through the National Water Grid Fund, has funded the development of a detailed business case to determine the optimal enabling water infrastructure solution to deliver water across the WA-NT border.
  • The Western Australian and Northern Territory governments are currently finalising an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA), demonstrating strong inter-jurisdictional cooperation.

The opportunity

The Ord River Irrigation Area is already known for its production strength; however the region is now entering a new phase of opportunity, driven by increased scale of production, developing a detailed business case to resolve the water infrastructure gaps, and workforce demand.

The development of Sweetwater will expand the Ord River Irrigation Area footprint and create agricultural scale in the region.

AAM already has a material presence in the Territory, owning and operating Legune Station and the licensed area of Spirit Hills pastoral lease, (i.e. NT Portions 5774 and 5774), as well as other agricultural interests.

AAM also operates a diverse range of agricultural enterprises across the supply chain from cattle, sheep, mixed farming, poultry and timber in NSW, Qld and SA.

Subject to Traditional Owner engagement and obtaining the relevant approvals, the development of Sweetwater for irrigated agricultural development, will enhance AAM’s strategic growth in the Territory, creating jobs, fostering economic resilience for the Northern Territory and delivering lasting benefits for communities throughout the region.
