The Northern Territory’s energy sector, particularly gas and renewables, is growing rapidly, driven by development of the world-scale Beetaloo Gas Sub-basin, and renewable solar energy projects such as Sun Cable.

This will create significant opportunity over the next decade for companies seeking to expand and grow their operations leveraging their expertise and experience in areas such as:

• Importation, warehousing / storage and transportation of critical goods and services from points of origination to upstream locations within the Northern Territory
• Supplying technical equipment, installing products and providing maintenance services and resources. Examples may include:
  • Pipe manufacture and installation

Globally significant gas reserves in the Northern Territory’s Beetaloo Subbasin could propel advanced manufacturing, domestic supply security and cleaner energy production in Australia, with long-term global gas supply potentials of international significance.

With a global energy transition underway, natural gas is positioned as a key transitional fuel, particularly if paired with carbon reduction strategies.

Gas, solar, wind, hydrogen, CCS/CCUS

Approximately 500km southeast of Darwin, the Beetaloo Sub-basin covers 28,000 square kilometres and is estimated to contain 500 Trillion cubic feet of gas (P50 gas-in-place resource as estimated by industry) – that’s just the Velkerri B layer and does not include other known gas bearing geological layers. Overall, Beetaloo is considered one of the most promising onshore gas resources in the country, with significant investment opportunities— particularly in natural gas exploration and development.

With one of the highest irradiances in the world, the Northern Territory produces 58 MJ per year with an average of 22- 24 MJ/m2. The Sun Cable project, already well advanced, will be, upon completion, the world’s largest solar energy facility. In terms of wind, the potential for large-scale onshore wind farms exists with minimum average speeds of 6-8m/s.

There are also opportunities in the renewable hydrogen and wind sectors and in previously announced Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS) and Battery Storage & Grid Stability projects.

Essential to the success of these opportunities will be investment in supporting services and sustainable infrastructure such as the Middle Arm Precinct.
